Intelius is a company that operates by selling information services. They specialize in background checks, address and phone records, and property searches. It might seem like Intelius is just out to make money out of information, and you'd actually be right since this is the product they supply as a service – paid information searches.

Opting Out Of Intelius

Intelius is a company that operates by selling information services. They specialize in background checks, address and phone records, and property searches.

It might seem like Intelius is just out to make money out of information, and you’d actually be right since this is the product they supply as a service – paid information searches.

Intelius is merely filling a need for companies that require background checks, but unfortunately due to some of their marketing techniques when someone Google’s your name search results may end up showing up from the Intelius site which you are not happy with.

Before I talk about the opt-out process for Intelius, note that there are two strategies you can use before or on top of tackling Intelius.

One is to ensure you have adequate information about yourself available online that pushes down the ranking of aggregate third-party sites like Intelius.

The second is to tackle the problem at its source, find out where Intelius found the information, and try to get it removed there.

I’ll talk more about these options shortly, in the meantime let’s review the Intelius opt-out process. They don’t make it easy, but it is available if you simply want to have your information removed from their site.

Intelius Opt-Out Process

There are two ways you can attempt to opt-out of Intelius services. I mention attempt since the company aggregates information and they will continue to do so, if a new piece of information appears about you, the opt-out request may only cover specific information, not your name or variations of your name, so new information can pop up again.

Intelius Opt-out Online

In the privacy section of their website, Intelius has an opt-out page.

Visit this page, which will prompt you to upload proof of ID. The must match the name and address on the record you wish to have removed. In the additional details state your full name, address, and date of birth as per their records, and include a request that all related entries are removed from their site and all sites they own.

The removal process is reported to take 7 to 10 days. If you provide an email, they will send notification of when the removal is complete, but it pays to check back with them regularly.

Intelius Opt-out Fax Request

If you have tried the online opt-out and for some reason, it has not worked, then Intelius can alternatively be contacted by fax to have your record removed.

Create a letter detailing very specifically the information you wish to have removed. Attach a copy of your ID to prove it is your record. Fax both to Intelius at 425-974-6194.

Then wait and check, fax requests can take up to 6 weeks to process.

Further Advice on Getting Your Own Content Ranking

Getting information removed from Intelius is only the beginning since they collect their data from other sources. The next step is to review other sources through a comprehensive search under your name.

It may not always be possible to have all your online information removed, since some may be public records. In this case, the best solution is to create enough information about yourself that the results you don’t want showing up are pushed off the first page.

Getting the Right Information to Rank

To get the right information about yourself to rank instead of Intelius results, you need to be committed to posting regular and updated content and regularly reviewing search results. If you don’t have the time to do this, the services of an online reputation management company can help.

Posting online should include content such as:

Your biography on any websites you own;

Include and update a blog regularly on your websites;

Your correct, updated profile on all social media accounts you hold, and regularly contribute to the accounts;

Submitting articles to popular content mills like Reddit or Quora;

Guest posting in your niche;

Adding a bio and signature to any products you sell online.

This is not a comprehensive list, but it should give you a good starting point, to allow your information, that you want people to know, to populate search results.

A Final Word On Intelius Opt-out

While an opt-out for Intelius and their parent or subsidiary companies should be relatively easy, they are not the only personal information site online, there are many, many more. Creating a digital reputation that accurately described you and performs well in search is the best tactic to prevent these type of results from being seen by someone checking your profile.
